why should we use start-of-selection and end of selection .

what may happen if i wouldnt use it.

when i should or shouldn't use it.

hi,

ABAP is an event driven language.It executes based on the events.

Start-of-selection is used for retrieving the data from the tables.

End-Of-Selection is used to print the details.

If u do not use any events then it is not a problem but if u use any of the events u should definitely use Start-of-selection or else it wont get triggered.

The order of the events is

1.Initialization

2.At Selection-screen

3.Start-of-selection

4.Top-of-page

5.End-of-page

6.End-of-selection

But there is another default event Load-of-program

when do i use it .

somebody suggested me that if we have more selection statements then we have to use it otherwise if we have only one select stm means then it is not necessary.

is it right.

I dont think so.

Using the events depends on ur programming.

If u use atleast one event in ur report then u should definitely use Start-of-selection.

Start-of-Selection.

Here the program starts selecting values from tables.

1) Processing block is executed after processing the selection screen

2) All the data is selected in this block.

3) All the main processing on the data except for interactive reporting is handled in this block.

The REPORT statement always executes a START-OF-SELECTION implicitly.

Consequently all processing logic between the REPORT statement and the next event keyword is automatically processed in the START-OF-SELECTION event.

End-of-selection.

After all the data has been selected this event writes the data to the screen.

Data which is selected and has been processed is printed to the screen in this block.

List Processing happens in this block

1) Top-of-Page.

2) New-Page.

3) End-of-Page.

Events during List Processing

Top-of-Page.

Triggered by the first write statement in the program

It is used to have a standard header in the program for all the pages.

TOP-OF-PAGE is only executed before outputting the first line on a new page

New-Page.

Can be used when one wants to display different data on different pages

Terminates the current page and continues output on a new page.

Will not trigger the Top-of-Page or End-of-Page.

End-of-Page.

It is used to have a standard footer for all the pages.

Triggered by the program if the number of records exceed the line-count of the program.

No mandatory, but a good idea, especially if using other events like AT SELECTION-SCREEN. If using these other events, you do need to have the START-OF-SELECTION event in order to fire your main line program, otherwise all of your main line code would be under the AT SELECTION-SCREEN event and would not be fired when you hit F8.

To Summarize, they are not mandatory by the syntax checker, but it is a good idea to use the START-OF-SELECTION event in your report programs, personally, I have never used the END-OF-SELECTION event in my report programs, I believe this is for when working with logical databases.

you use start-of-selection to make a new code-section.

->you must use it when you've used events like initialization or at selection-screen.

-> othw. your coding is processed in the earlier events

end-of-selection is only used in reports with logical database (LDB) to close selection from DB.

HI,

ths usesge of START-OF-SELECTION and END-OF-SELECTION depends on our requirements. the system defaultlt add START-OF-SELECTION event for every executable program.

under START-OF-SELECTION event we genarally keep SELECTION-STATEMENTS, because the basic list genarated by START-OF-SELECTION event only. it is mandatory while we r working with INTERACTIVE REPORTS.

we can also keep write statements under END-OF-SELECTION . whenever the control encounters the END-OF-SELECTION then only the workprocessor move from report to list processot to genarate list.

Hi friend,

START-OF-SELECTION is not a mandatory statement. Just go through the statements from SAP documentation.

The REPORT statement always executes a START-OF-SELECTION implcitly. Consequently all processing logic between the REPORT statement and the next event keyword is automatically processed in the START-OF-SELECTION event.

Immediately afterwards, the system processes the statements that belong to an explicit START-OF-SELECTION block.

Good question! Let me try to answer this :

Statements that are not assigned to a processing block are never executed .

An exception to this are any non-declarative statements between the REPORT or PROGRAM statement and the first processing block, which are assigned to the default event START-OF-SELECTION if a program does not contain an explicit START-OF-SELECTION block, these statements form the entire START-OF-SELECTION block.

Regarding START-OF-SELECTION event

If a START-OFSELECTION keyword is already included in your program, these statements are inserted at the beginning of this block. If the program does not contain any explicit event blocks, all nondeclarative statements are assigned to the default processing block START-OF-SELECTION.

If you take an example below:

REPORT EVENT_TEST.

WRITE / 'Statement 1'.

FORM ROUTINE.

WRITE / 'Subroutine'.

ENDFORM.

WRITE / 'Statement 2'.

PERFORM ROUTINE.

WRITE / 'Statement 3'.

Here you cannot access the perform routine as it does not come under any event block. By default , REPORT EVENT_TEST and WRITE / 'Statement 1 form the first processing block whoch is start-of-selection.

Now if i modify this code to explicitly declare start-of-selection event then:

REPORT EVENT_TEST.

WRITE / 'Statement 1'.

FORM ROUTINE.

WRITE / 'Subroutine'.

ENDFORM.

START-OF-SELECTION.

WRITE / 'Statement 2'.

PERFORM ROUTINE.

WRITE / 'Statement 3'.

In this program, the START-OF-SELECTION processing block consists of all

statements except the FORM-ENDFORM block.

Regarding END-OF-SELECTION

Mailny while using the logical databases , end-of-selection and get forms a kind of loop...endloop statement . see e.g below:

This program fills a sorted table with data from the logical database in the GET

SPFLI event, and displays them in a list in the END-OF-SELECTIOn event.

In the reports without a logical database , END-Of-SELECTION processing block , you will display all your data stpred in the internal tables.

Basically END-OF-SELECTIOn is important if you have lists to display as then the control goes to the list processor and then it executes the events accordingly.
