Venkat,

R/3 (SAP) is a ERP system; it will have an application server & DB server (both can be in the same psychical machine) and several prentation servers (the one which you use to interact with SAP). Now let us discuss about middleware, Middleware; as its name suggest, its a middle ware between 2 systems. It can be in between SAP R/3 and for example Siebel systems. The primary purpose of middleware is to translate the communication between two systems; which means both the systems can understand. We have several middlewares in the market like TIBCO, MQseries etc.

Why we should have in seperate system?

Because R/3 does not have any middleware components (but new Netweaver comes with XI) so we need to have a middle ware to talk to other systems.

Reward if this is helpful

suresh,

R/3 is like any other legacy system.

middleware, the term is itself is explanatory.it acts as a mediator 2 communicate bt 2 systems.

say r/3 and non-sap

r/3 and r/3 also some times.

ex of middleware are mercator, gentran, business communicator.

u can even call XI(component of netweaver) as a middleware.

award points if found helpful

thanks

kiran

Hi

Middleware is connectivity software that consists of a set of enabling services that allow multiple processes running on one or more machines to interact across a network. Middleware is essential to migrating mainframe applications to client/server applications and to providing for communication across heterogeneous platforms.

Ex: COM,DCOM,CORBA, Business Connectors

SAP R/3 uses Interfaces to connect to external Systems like BAPI, RFC etc

Reward points if useful

Regards

Anji
