ABAP Upgrade

Hi,

We are upgrading from a 4.0B to 5.0 system ....and experiencing the following error "CHAR STRINGS W/O TEXT ELEMENTS WON'T BE TRANSLATED" when we run the code through code inspector.

The code looks like :

CONSTANTS :

K_RUNMODE(1) VALUE ' ',

K_COUNTRY(3) VALUE 'US ' ,

K_LANGUAGE(3) VALUE 'EN ' ,

K_SCRN_TITLE01(50) VALUE 'Create Vendor Master Data'.

I have modified it to:

CONSTANTS :

K_RUNMODE(1) VALUE ' ',

K_COUNTRY(3) VALUE 'US ' ,

K_LANGUAGE(3) VALUE 'EN ' ,

K_SCRN_TITLE01 type string VALUE 'Create Vendor Master Data'.

I am still getting the error.

Would appreciate if anybody has expereinced a similar problem in the past. I also was running some other codes through code inspector and seems there are lot of issues with 5.0. The code runs perfectly in 4.0b.

any help would be appreciated and also would like to know if there is any reference anywhere in the web to start digging.

Hi Rajib,

This should only be a warning not an error, yes?

What it means is because you have 'hard coded' string values into your constants that they will not be translated into other languages.

For example, the title of your screen will always be 'Create Vendor Master Data' whether the user logs in in English, or German, or Korean!

This is obviously not always a problem, but SAP warns you to let you know that it could cause problems in multi-language systems. And that this can be prevented by using program text elements that can be translated into all relevant languages.

Hi Rajib,

All the system is telling you is that you have not defined the variable K_SCRN_TITLE01 contents 'Create Vendor Master Data' as a text element and so it cannot be translated to additional languages if and when you require to translate these texts.

define the text literals in the program that need translation into text elements

e.g. TEXT-001

or 'Create Vendor Master Data'(001).

Anyhow it is a warning and should not impact the program itself if the only language used in English.

I think it answers my question.

Also want to know how to create the text elements...is there any specific area to do that.

Secondly, seems lot of the functions (like replace, etc) has undergone change...is there any specfic place where I can find about client posting their upgrade experience.

Hi Rajib,

Text elements are maintained from SE38. From the front screen you have radio buttons (from memory) for accessing program text elements (they are tied to your program).

4.0B to 5.0 is a big upgrade. The Underlying technology in the WAS has been enhanced a lot!!!

Try using the SDN search facility to search for UPGRADE to see whether people have posted blogs, articles etc.
