TREE STructures

hi all,

i was working with the tree structures . . . i used CL_GUI_SIMPLE_TREE. when i was done with it i found that it can only make one level nodes nesting .

Please help what should i use, i want to have a tree with any number of levels of tree nodes.

Hi Zahid,

if I understand you correctly I think you should use CL_GUI_COLUMN_TREE instead.

do you mean number of levels? it can handle any number of levels. check whether you have given the parent child relationship properly.

can u come up with a little more details, actually i am a beginner i have mini sap with me and i don't even know how to find out the samle program u mentioned .

More over can u please tell me any source from where i can get list and functions of all the methods of a class and then all the arguments and their purpose of any method.

to got to the sample program

got to transaction se38

type in the sample program name and hit F7

to get to the CLASS and its methods & attributes go to transaction se24.

well i have seen that program, the structure used in that program to fill out the tree is "MTREESNODE

" and the structure i used was "ABDEMONODE" i think that will make some difference. The second thing is i think he is not creating tree dynamically with the help of the query. Please tell me how do i fill the table structure i mean how the relationship of the parent and child should be built.

i have a table in which i have three columns

Child_topic_id topic_name parent topic_id

1 TOPIC1 0

1.1 TOPIC1.1 1

1.1.1 TOPIC1.1.1 1.1

2 TOPIC2 0

2.1 TOPIC2.1 2

2.1.1 TOPIC2.1.1 2.1

hope you understand the structure and also what i mean by any number of level nesting. hope now u can help how to build the parent child relation in the Tree Structure for this particular scenerio.

The other thing which i asked was to get help about the classes , their methods and the arguments of the methds.

i tried SE24 but it just shows the method names and a short description which is not good enogh for me to understand. moreover there is no help for the arguments in the methods.

What i need is a complete documented detail about each method and each argument in it, e.g what values can be given in an argument, and what will happen if a value A is given anf what will happen if a VALUE B is given.

well i tried to put spaces in the table values for clarity but it didn't shows then

http://help.sap.com is the best place for the documentation for the classes and its methods.

Please note that you may not find the documentation for all the classes.

Alternatively from se24 for a desired class do a where used list, and see how that class has been used in those programs.

Helli Zahid,

Building a tree is not a one-step process. In fact, I consider it a bit more subjective(less generic) than a Grid.

You want to build a tree with 3 levels. And you want to use the class CL_GUI_SIMPLE_TREE. The program that Raja had provided, SAPSIMPLE_TREE_CONTROL_DEMO, is a wonderful program. Have you taken a look at it ? It is a Demo program and for this reason, the code is particularly well documented. Now, it takes a weebit of imagination on your side to understand how a tree would actually be built. You should ask yourself questions like -

1. Do I use the TOP-DOWN approach to build a tree ? Or is it a BOTTOM-UP approach that is to be used ? Or is it something else ?

2. Do I first build all the root nodes and then insert the nodes on the next level and so on ?

3. Or is it the case that I start at the root of one node and go till the leaf level , and then start off with the next root node ?

And so on...

Please note that the above line of thinking does not have much to do with how a tree data-structure is built in ABAP. It can be used for any programming language. Please read some suitable documentation on Trees (as data-structures) and then start with the demo program that's mentioned. That should help you.

You are always welcome to ask doubts, but just make sure, as far as possible, that it is a doubt and not an entire code sample for something as complicated as a tree.

So he already appreciated the efforts for giving information regarding the Tree Control itself. In fact I am a bigger fan of yours than Zahid. He is just additionally asking for the documentation about SAP classes and methods. Those from non-SAP background are usually expecting something like the MSDN or JAVA DOCS that detail the usage of a particular class/method/etc. For that, usually there is a Documentation button in SAP. Additionally, the person can go to SE63, choose Translation->Long Texts->Classses and Interfaces-><choose anything they like>. The class SIMPLE_TREE and its methods are well documented there.

Hope this will assist Zahid in his task at hand.

What I understand when he says "....the problem i am actually facing, i mentioned in the above post..." is that he wants to have a solution to the problem of building a tree of his specifications.

In fact, I see that you had also sent him a mail giving him some information. I have no idea about what that was.

Since he says he is a beginner, I just wanted to give him a little food for thought, if I can call it that, to some basic problem-solving skills in computation. The tree control had just happened to be an example here.

Trust this sorts things out a bit. Please revert, if you have something else to be clarified.

P.S. 1. I personally prefer going to the Class and clicking the button for "Method Documentation" (place your cursor on the method name and hit F9), rather than going to SE63 (to which the developer might sometimes be unauthorized)

2. Attempting / wanting to find out the documentation of all the objects (be it programs / FMs / classes / anything ) is something that I don't think makes too much sense. You would have to know the object for which you want the documentation. In other words, you would have to know ( or find out if you do not know ) the tool that you need to use. Then you can read more about it and see if the particular tool does what you want. It is hardly the case that you see what a tool offers and then decide whether you have a requirement for that.

I am sorry but you didn't understand me . . . if u carefully read my post in which i described my problem , there i didn't asked for the sample code.

i just said:

i just wanted to have a clue that what should come in the node_key and what should come in the relatkey in the tree structure node_table for the given values.

I appreciate your concern for me ! i like make efforts myself but a little help can make the problems solved quickly and thats why this forum has been made i think.

I have solved my problem and with the help of u people i have clearly understood the structure for a tree.

Under child id column you have the relationships correctly.

each node has to have a unique id.

let us take the example of -

1.1.1---

convert it something like 1.a.test

fill the node table like below.

for 1 there will be no parent

for a parent will be 1 and

for test parent will be a

Hi Anand,

I missed out the latest post...was looking at the one prior to that..sorry about that.

I have been using SE63 for function modules that have not been documented in English. So when you press the documentation button, the system simply tells that it does not exist in user logon language. So all I do is open the documentation in (DE e.g.) using SE63, open a website that offers German to English translation and start writing that down. Once activated, its avaialable in my logon language. That is just a work pattern I follow, hence suggested that.

Food for thought is always good. I prefer the same but sometimes there is nothing like a step-by-step guide. I felt that while doing a linux-based project some time ago. What took me a couple of weeks to understand, I simply posted that on the discussion forum and people liked that. This is exactly what happens on SDN when people like Serdar Simsekler write the "ALV Grid Control Reference" and alikes. Perhaps this thread will make Serdar come up with another wonderful paper on Tree Controls

Keep coming back to share your knowledge with the rest of us. We all look forward to that.
