Entering fieldnames when creating / changing DDIC structures

When creating or changing a dictionary structure using transaction SE11 (Dictionary: Maintain structure) one can't enter a fieldname which contains ' '.

Everytime a ' ' is left in the column 'fieldname' (in between two other characters) the system replaces this ' ' with an underline.

It seems as if this replacement is done by the presentation server (SAPGUI) and not by the application server.

Example: Input of 'FIELD 2' -> result 'FIELD_2'

Who can explain this behavior, what have I to do to use this behavior for own screen fields?

What you are seeing is simply the underlining of the fieldname. This is the field level attribute. You will also notice that it displays a message saying that there is a space in the field name and it is not allowed. Hence, it is not replacing the space with _, but you are simply seeing the underline. Make sence?

Thanks for your quick reply. The functionality we're describing is SE11 specific.

Try to do it yourself within SE11 by adding a field! You will see the specific. Even if you try to use the same domain in an own report/program this won't work.
