What is this error while creating a new ABAP project in Eclipse?

I've installed the ABAP development plugin for Eclipse Oxygen. As I try to create an ABAP project, the following error pops up.

After clicking OK, this window opens:

What is this system ID? I have a HANA database userid and password and also know the instance number. But where can I find the System ID and is application server same as the server IP/Hostname of my HANA server?

Hi Tanmay,

have you installed SAP GUI on your local machine? This is a prerequisite to use ABAP in Eclipse.

No, I have not. I didn't know that it was needed. Thank you.

I searched about it and read that it's not available for free. Is that true? What about members of the SAP partnerEdge program?

Hi Tanmay,

I guess you are using the ABAP Developer Edition as your ABAP system.

There you will also find a SAP GUI for free as part of the installation package.

I think it's not the developer edition.

We have installed SAP HANA DB version 2.0 on a remote SUSE Linux server. I connect to it using the HANA administration plugin for eclipse from Windows 10. SQL operations are working fine.

I am looking for developing in ABAP on my local machine. So, I'll have to install SAP GUI on the local system, right?

Hi Tanmay,

there is no local development possible with ABAP. You need an ABAP application server that is connected to your HANA DB.

Then you can connect your Eclipse IDE with that Application server.
