That is depending on what change you plan to do.

For instance if your type is originally a character field with length 10 ...

... and you change it to a character with length 20 -> data is not changed

... and you change it to a character with length 5 -> your field is to short and the necessary db conversion will cut off the values after 5 characters.

Hello pavan2326,

Kindly let us know the following details:

1) What change is to be carried out?

2) The domain is allotted to which field (Primary/Normal) in the table?

3) If you are changing the length alone then there can be data loss as explained above

Enlighten us with the complete details.

Regards!

Hi Pavan,

as others already mentioned, more information of what you actually want to change is needed. Please update your OP or add a comment to it. Thanks!

But, generally speaking, these help(ful) documents from SAP explain what can happen when applying changes to an existing table like reducing the length of an existing field:

Conversion process

Conversion problems

Hope this helps (and yes, the docs are fairly old but I'm not aware that anything really changed with this process over the years)

Cheers

Bärbel

pavan2326,

In this case since you are increasing currency length there should not be any issues. Recommend you to adjust the database table using T-Code SE14 after the changes are done. Also check the data before and after the changes/Adjustments.

Regards!

Hi Pavan,

If you are increasing the length of domain then data will not be affected but after changing the length you will have to adjust and activate database(in se11 Utilities->database object->Database utility->Adjust and activate Database) for all the tables where this domain have been used.

You should not decrease the length of domain, if used in multiple tables and if it has data in this field. You can do this if you are sure that, the data format has to be changed in all the tables.

In both the above cases, you will have to adjust and activate database.

Thanks & Regards,

Gaurav K.
