Output mode Start subsystem, message code and message function

Hello ABAPer,

I have some questions on Partner profiles.

1. What is the use of Start subsystem and how it works. I understand that it is used to start a receiving system, may be via a rfc call or some program script. But how exactly it works and use of it. I feel it helps to communicate system status code as well but I am not sure. Please throw some light on this.

2. Use of message code and message function? What I understood from other posts is it is used in cases where you want to send IDOCs using different process codes or same message type with different functionalities.

I invested lot of time in reading other SCN posts for above two queries, most of the people are doing copy paste, without connection to original question. I request to provide how above two setting works and now mere definitions.
