Diffrence between WAS, BASIS, ABAP Software???

Dear Friends,

I am New to SAP, I apologize if i posted in wrong Topic,

I am really Confused as whether to download WAS or Basis or some other thing.

My problem is i am going to Join SAP ABAP Training course from Genovate INdia,

So i want to Practise ABAP programs before i join them so that i will get used to the enivronment and it will be beneficial.

My confusion is whether to Download WAS OR BASIS provided in "Software " section

Secondly do we need to use Some Ftp clicnt to download the CD.

I am runnning Win Xp SP2, can i download the cd Using IE.

PLz help.

Also would like to get some guidance to error free installation as well.

Hello,

I recommend that you download "Full ABAP Edition-Trial (with Web Dynpro for ABAP!)" package from SDN downloads section and install it to your computer. With help of that you can practise ABAP programming and BASIS stuff. It comes with detailed installation intstructions and if I remember correctly there is also some weblogs about installation process. There is also a specific forum section for installation instructions and issues.

Can you send us link? I tried to download "SAP NetWeaver Sneak Preview and Trial

"from downlods but i was unable to download.

To answer your question, WAS, WebAs, Web Application Server, and Basis, mean pretty much the same thing. The term "Basis" was used in older releases of R/3 ending with 46c. In r/3 4.7, the basis part of the system was renamed to Web Application Server, or WAS, or WebAS. This was the first version of WebAs to be bundled with an R/3 system, it was 6.20. There was a 6.10 and 6.30, but I don't think that 6.10 was actually used with a core system. 6.30 never made it to the public. 6.40 was the first WebAs to be included under the Netweaver name. 7.00 is the lastest and is under the Netweaver 2004s release. 7.10 is right around the corner.

You should download the Sneak Preview that has already been mentioned eariler.
