Why do we have to give three different field labels length as only one 'Long field label ' can solve the purpose as it only the length that is taken by the screens(whether normal or selection screens) ?

Because that's how SAP designed it? Why do you think SAP might have designed it that way - go on, make some guesses.

That is what i am asking what is the need to give three different lengths as only "Long" is taken bye default by the screens . How can i guess by hit & trial ?

SAP designed it like that. How can anyone except the people who designed the application give you a definitive answer? They can't. So the only answer you get here will be best guess. Hence, I'm interested to see what your guesses would be.

What I guess is that, when ever the size of the field is reduced then the Short & Medium will come into play.

If suppose i gave the field label in English language and user's logon language is German and we know that screen's take 'Long' length and suppose the translation of that text in German is very large , then screens can go for Short or Medium length field label .

This is my guess .

I think it's possibly because then you have different descriptions available in different contexts. So I might want to write my program to use a shorter text because I have a full screen.

I guess Medium and Short texts are used in reports.

Can you imagine a grid (ALV or table control) with your only long text for a dozen of field of 1 character, how nice...

very very long header text	even longer longer longer longer longer text	to be continued...................................................................................................
