How to edit variants with 'Only for background processing enabled' ?

Hi All

If a user runs any transaction. gives some selection criteria , and saves it as variant with the check box 'Only for background Processing' marked ,

where can he edit that variant afterwards ?

The variant is not shown when we click on 'Get Variant' button also .

You should be able to edit it e.g. via SA38 entry screen, "Goto -> Variants".

Once you started the program via F8, it's too late, you are in online processing already and those background variants are not shown.

Hi Varsha,

Goto SE93 . Get the program name of the transaction. Say if the tcode is FBL1n then the program is RFITEMAP.

Go to SE38->Enter the program name & Select Variant radio button and change.

You will be able to change the variant which you have set as 'only for background'.

Thanks for your reply .

Since the business users will not have access to SA38 transaction , is there any other alternative way

using which they can edit that variant?

Is it possible to create a new wrapper transaction for SA38 ?

Another access is through SM37, display job steps, select step, "Goto -> Maintain Variants".

I did not find a way (after quick search) to handle this when the user is already looking at the selection screen.

As a side note - the users should not be saving variants with this checkbox and if this happened by mistake then a person with access to SA38 (or other technical transactions) could open the variant, remove the checkbox and save it. The user should be trained properly. Since this is (or at least should be) more of an exception, it doesn't seem reasonable to invent ways for the users to fix this on regular basis.

Hi Jelena

IT users at customer site have configured the variants in such a way that they want some variants to be executed only in the background . And they frequently need to change the date ranges given in the variant , that is why they want editing of these enabled .

If you still want it you can either use SA38 else create a copy of transaction SA38 in SE93 with authorization issues.

IT users, as long as they are involved in SAP support, should have SA38 access, in my humble experience.

Then they can also change the background variants when required.

If you don't want to provide SA38 access to users using authorization object S_PROGRAM, you could create a very small report and a transaction to wrap variant maintenance :

PARAMETERS: program TYPE rsvar-report.
 
 AT SELECTION-SCREEN ON VALUE-REQUEST FOR program.
   CALL FUNCTION 'REPOSITORY_INFO_SYSTEM_F4'
     EXPORTING
       object_type          = 'PROG'
       object_name          = program
       suppress_selection   = 'X'
     IMPORTING
       object_name_selected = program
     EXCEPTIONS
       OTHERS               = 0. " to be completed
 
 START-OF-SELECTION.
   CALL FUNCTION 'RS_VARIANT_LIST'
     EXPORTING
       report              = program
       status              = 'LIS1'
     EXCEPTIONS
       OTHERS              = 0. " to be completed

But progam name wont be useful for many users, so you may change the selection-screen to allow user to access to their variants by creator's name or similar information from VARID/VARIT and then call FM RS_VARIANT_CHANGE.

I am having a similar error with variant 'T01' created in transaction ME21N.

in SE93 I found out the program for ME21N is RM_MEPO_GUI.

in SE38 I entered program name and selected variant radio button and clicked on change, system gave me below message.

"Program RM_MEPO_GUI has no selection screens"

is there any other way to get this sorted out?
