There is no particular reason.

Variable name can have any character except + . , : ( )

Several languages have dollar sign prefixed before variable name. e.g. Javascript, Ruby etc

So there is a good chance that the person who declared variable name starting with dollar used to program in different language that had rule or convention of using dollar sign.

Occassionally I come across fields that have a $ as first character.

For example program MIT30F12 has field $kurs and many more beginning with $.

Is there any particular reason for this? It seems when I debug it performs pretty much the same as a normal field so I am just trying to understand the logic for this.

Any pointers greatly appreciated. Thank you.

There is no specific reason for it. Like Alok said, it maybe part of generated code. You can also see the similar scenario in PBO and PAI of a report program with selection screen.

Regards,

~Athreya
