what is Functional Spec ?

Hello GURUuuuuuuuuuuu,

As i am learning ABAP , I know that before ABAPer write a program Functional User's give Functional Spec to ABAPer so that they can write a program So i want to know that what is Functional Spec (example) and how ABAPer get those Functional Spec from Functional user ?......Please explain w.r.t real time scenario.

Hi,

Functional consultants gather the exact requirement from client and prepares a functional specification. He sends that document to client and gets approval from client business owner. functional specification contains in detail requirement of client, expected delivery date, selection screen input fields and output format/fields..etc. Most importantly logic to fetch the data like from which tables need to fetch data and processing logic..etc.

Hi Happy,

Mitra, this is for two basic purpose.

1. A proof that ABAPer(Programmer) is going to built something then the program should behave as written in Functional specification. If it is not behaving the blame comes to two people. Technical and Functional, If code is written as per FS(Functional Specification) then programmer is safe and Functional in danger. If code not per FS then Functional is save and Technical in danger.

2. What is content of FS : This basically tells an ABAPer what he is going to do and why. As told above

e.g. I(client) want a report of all the employee who are hired in year 2012. I will tell this to Functional(in layman terms)

Now functional will write a document and get it signed from me. Functional will write.

Business Requirement : To identify the increase in number of human resources in organisation.

Logic : From PA0000 get all pernr whose begda is greater then or equal to 01.01.2012 and endda is less than or eq 31.12.2012 and action is 'E1'

From PA0002 Get name of all employees from field CNAME.

output in a table with fields

pernr cname.

Now once the ABAPer is done no one can say why is pernr 1st coloumn. As thats what the FS say. So FS is an life saving document for ABAPer and Functional.
