SAP fields per table

Hi,

I need to build, from a list of tables which are relevant to the generation of document XYZ, a SELECT to get the names of all the fields there are in these tables - not the contents, just the fieldnames, no type, length, nothing else.

I know the DD tables, DD02L is where all the table_names are and DD03L is where all the field_names are (supposedly). But I don't know how to link them - or should I even be looking somewhere else? How can I find out which fields are in any given table?

Can anybody help me there?

Hi Laurent,

never mind. I just read it on se80.co.uk. It looks good - if it does what I presume it does, that is, return me the structure (I need only the fields) of a given table.

However, I'm not sure what input I have to provide for that module? Some internal table with the table_names I am interested in, no doubt?

There are no IMPORTING parameters, only one TABLE parameter called nametab. I suppose that's it? So I need an internal table of that name called that? I have an internal table already to save all the relevant table_names therein, it's just called differently.

Hi,

You may not require DD02L table if you already have table names. DD03L has the fields TABNAME which is the table name and FIELDNAME as table field names. If you want to link then DD02L-TABNAME = DD03L-TABNAME.

You cannot execute it at once for many tables. You can execute it tab by tab. The importing parameter is the DB table name for which you want the details.

Hi Hardik,

that is the way I currently do it, using the tabname and then selecting from DD03L using that tabname.

Can any of you tell me which of those two alternative methods would be faster, given that I can execute this function_module only for one table at a time also? Unless there is a mayor difference, I would just stick to the method I know. This is only a preliminary step for the GUI, so it should not take more than a few seconds to assemble those table_names and field_names for display in a tree-structure (that is part of the GUI programmed by my colleague).

For your requirement , I suppose that the best method is the select than the FM. The FM could be useful if you wanted more info about the fields.

thanks a lot!

The situation has changed a bit, however: I need not only the field_names, but now I need

- the table_text (from table DD02T)

- the fields (from table DD03L)

- the field_texts (from table DD03T)

for any table_name.

I think the SELECT is fast enough, but for now I have only 14 table_names and there are more to come because for any given type of document, quite a lot of tables are potentially relevant.

Would you still say that the SELECT is faster than using that FM or do those extra infos tip the balance?

Hi,

Select will be the faster choice with joins. I would suggest you to have the internal table consisting of table names, table text, field name and field text. The sample select would be

SELECT DD02L-TABNAME DD02T-DDTEXT DD03L-FIELDNAME DD03T-DDTEXT

FROM DD02L INNER JOIN DD02T On

DD02L-TABNAME = DD02T-TABNAME

INNER JOIN DD03L ON

DD02L-TABNAME = DD03L-TABNAME

INNER JOIN DD03T ON

DD03L-TABNAME = DD03T-TABNAME

AND DD03L-FIELDNAME = DD03T-FIELDNAME

WHERE DD02L-TABNAME IN <table name list>

AND DD02T-DDLANGUAGE = sy-langu

AND DD03T-DDLANGUAGE = sy-langu.

perfect! Also, that is near exactly what I have done. Only there seem to be two issues with that approach:

1) DD03T does for some reason not have all the table names - for ex. you won't find BKPF in there when searching for texts although it exists.

2) For the fields of those nonexistent tables, fields and field_texts do exist in DD03T, often two or three - so I get two or three results from my SELECT command.

I will try adding a filter for IS NOT INITIAL or something.

P.S.: Hmm... that does not seem to do the trick. SELECT SINGLE prompts some other syntax issues with my INTO TABLE part and the option UP TO n ROWS does not solve the issue - I don't want to reduce the result in absolute terms, but merely to avoid selecting duplicate entries which I then have to get rid off in an extra step.

Can you think of a solution to this?

My first example is BKPF btw.

P.P.S.: Ok, this one is fixed - I found another format for the filter to exclude records with nothing in the field DDTEXT - but that still does not avoid duplicates: For some FIELDNAMEs in DD03T, there are several records with DDTEXT filled - then I still end up with duplicates.

Okay, the program is ready to go.

Only it takes much too long - it takes about 3sec for 14 tables - I will have up to 80 or so going forward - and this is only a preliminary step before a GUI can be displayed.

Well, maybe that can be accelerated by selecting subsets of DD02T and DD03T into internal tables beforehand. Maybe there are lists in SAP - although I don't believe it, I would have found something or some of the pros would have told me about it otherwise - or maybe we can generate new DB tables or views that we can use going forward whenever we have that requirement so no new selection has to be made.

Unless you have some more useful information on whether there are any readymade lists of tables in SAP (I need a list of tables relevant for generating a certain type of document, kind of like T514N has for HR_documents, but that refers to a Cluster) or the like - I will mark this as Answered.
