Hi Thomas, sort of, access to legacy are restricted, logon credentials are off limit, RFC connection i believe their basis team would hook up for me SM59. I still need to export the flatfiles - daily batch run, so its not a one time off activities, its the business requirement. thought of IDOC initially , but the inbound would facilitate the new server, but still need a outbound interface from legacy, so i guess thats off. So i'm left with a simple RFC FM to access AL11 directories, not sure that will work, or a FTP FM to download the files, never tried that before, but then again still needs the RFC logon credentials config. Any suggestions?

Hi All,

Would like to know whats the best way to retrieve files from another server, both are SAP, its just that physically residing on different server. Say i'm working on server X but i need to retrieve files from server Y, problem is the client doesnt allow me to touch on server Y, so IDOC is pretty much out of the equation, so was wondering what are the best option do i have, FTP? RFC FM? Please advise

In my limited experience, you would not try to read such files remotely, rather have them sent to your SAP app server via simple FTP or one of the many file transfer frameworks, like Connect:Direct.

Thomas

Hi Thomas, Appreciate your reply, problem is that the client wont allow me access the server/ SAP (legacy system) so i cant develop any idocs or FTP FM to send to my current new server, was wondering if calling to the legacy system BAPI to retrieve/ download the flatfile would do

An RFC call would require a connection in SM59 and logon credentials in the legacy system, does your client allow that?

My suggestion would not require a change in the SAP system itself, rather an FTP or similar setup on the OS level. It would be very strange if your client obviously needs a solution but would not allow such an elementary setup.

Do I understand correctly at all that there are already files on the legacy server that just need to be transferred, or do you still need to export master or transaction data from the legacy system?

Thomas
