And it is always a case-to-case-decision. The best thing is to discuss the requirement in business terms (not the technical) details first. There are lots of forums on SCN where you can find experts who possibly faced your specific question already a couple of times and know a solution without a single line of code...

Regards

Clemens

Hi ALL,

I am a new member in SAP forum. I would like to say a warm 'HELLO' to everybody!!!

I have a quick question: Is it advisable to copy/clone a standard SAP program and carry out modifications to it ? I dont think its that easy a job to clone a standard program and make the changes to it in order to make it fit for the customer requirement. Moreover there are a lot of unknown dependencies that are not easy to identify...

Can you all put some thought to it !!!

Thanks & regards,

Hello Tanmoy,

welcome!

Before copying/modifying a SAP standard program you should always check whether there is a BAdI/Userexit/Enhancement spot you can use. If this is not possible you should check whether you can implement an implicit enhancement.

And if nothing of this is possible then you should copy it rather than modifying it.

Best regards,

Oliver

Hi,

In principle yes -you can copy- , but it's hard to say which is the best practise with no more information.

What kind of programm do you like to clone, small report or a big dialog transaction?

SAP provides User-Exits, Field-Exits, Badis, Enhancement-Points. You should try this this first. You can even for a code modification for the standard SAP Programm - depends on the situation.

When you clone the report/programm this will not be updated automatically within an future SAP upgrade...

Kind Regards,

Dirk
