why not calculate the length of the character string with strlen( ) when updating the table?

Or (perhaps depending upon your WebAS/Basis version), add a LOB (built-in type string, length 0) to the table, instead of char290?

Hi,

I'm increasing the length of a field in a customizing transparent table from 240 to 290.

This is exceeding 255 characters, hence, it shows a warning saying length exceeded.

So, I decided to use LCHR instead of CHAR.

Now, is it mandatiry to use an INT2 field before this field to always indicate the length of the field? I want to use just the field, but, this [link|http://help.sap.com/saphelp_45b/helpdata/EN/bc/897415dc4ad111950d0060b03c6b76/content.htm] says i have to create a new INT2 field before that. Can i skip creating the new INT2 field and still expect the LCHR field to work the same way?

Thanks,

Tabraiz
