Idoc segments

I'm changing the ASN code to allow additional data on one of the pack segments. The problem occurs when I try to edit the segment. I get an error when I try to cancel the release. Now this segment was release when we were still using 4.6C. Since then we've upgraded to the 7.0. I'm not sure if I need to create a whole new segment and Idoc (I'm getting the same problem when trying to cancel the release of the Idoc). Or do I just need to add a version? I'm not sure what it means by that. If I add a new version, can the other Idocs still use the old version? Can anyone give me any info?

SAP IDOCs are version dependent. For instance, a single IDOC type will change structure from one R/3 version to another: New segments may be added, fields may be added to the segments, and application processing of the IDOC within SAP may change.

For changing the active version ( ie if you want to add a new field or changing existing one) then

Select the active version (place the cursor in the active version line ) of the IDOC Segment in WE31 from the menu chosse edit -->cancel release then only you can able to add a new version.

The following is the documentation i found when i press f1 in the release column of WE31 transaction


IDoc development: Release of segment definition
The segment definition release specifies the system release for which the segment definition
was activated (released). If the segment definition has not been activated yet, 
the release is blank or 0.

The system release is specified in a three-character format.

Example : 30A, 45A

If a segment definition, i.e. a version of a segment, has been defined for a certain release
(for example, 30A), it remains active until the next version is created (for example, for 31G).
The definition for 30A still remains valid for the releases in between. Using this principle, the
versions that were active for a release are determined by specifying the release explicitly.

Previous versions can be used by specifying a release explicitly.

The SPACE entry can be used to determine the latest version of a segment, irrespective
or whether it has been activated (released) or not.

Only specify a release explicitly if you want to refer to a certain previous version.

Thanks for the reply. I found that since it was released in a previous version, I had to add another version to be able to add my stuff. I did this and it used the new version, so I didn't have to change the Idoc structure.

Yes, don't need change, just add another version with your current release

I have a std idoc PEXR2002 and I need to pass the E1IDT01 segment. i am seeing that this is already released along with basic type(this is a change I am doing to the already existing IDOC). how do I add a version to this standard segment if i have to pass values. thanks in advance,
