<i>please tell me is it necessary to use of data element with in data type.if it is necessary why?.or it is not necessary why? </i>

No it is not always necessary to use data elements to define a field of the table. You can choose direct types and define the attributes of the field. You use data elements when you think that there will be several fields that will use the same attributes such as field labels, type, length, search helps, etc. That way, you can just change in one place and all the fields that refer to it will attain the new attributes because they refer to this data element.

<i>what is the use of event start of selection.is it necessary to use if yes why?or if it is not necessary why? </i>

In addition to what others have said, you have to remember one thing is that lack of event specification will make all the code as start-of-selection code. So, if you don't want the code to be executed in the particular order, then you don't need to specify the events. But if you want certain code to be executed after such and such has happened, then you need the events to be specified.

Srinivas

Hi Harsha,

Start-of-selection evet is not mandatory, if you wont give also by default this event triggers.

But some programs like in HR, where we use logical data base and use Get command this will work in betwwn start-of-selection and End-of-selection , so here explicitly to control the loop we give both the events.

And about dataelement it describes field attributes, and it ensures that the filed attributes are always consistent.

Thanks & Regards,

Siri.

Hi sriharsha,

Traditional ABAP has been an event driven language.

Meaning, specific blocks of code executes in a pre defined order.

Initialization.

At Selecttion-screen.

At selection-screen output.

Start-of-slection.

end-of-selection.

Top-of-page.

end-of-page.

are a some of the events in ABAP Programming.

The code written in each of these blocks will be executed in an order.

As Srilatha has already mentioned, the default event is start-of-selection.

It is better to write your data selection statements here.

Regards,

Ravi

the use of data elements as type of any variable is always an advantage: For fields refering to a data element you have implicit field help on all input and output. Also you may have implicit input/output conversion, value-request, value check and more.

If someone wants to find out the ABAP field for an input/output on a screen (dynpro) this is only possible if the field uses a data element.

The data dictionary wit data element and domain definitions is one of the big advantages of ABAP over any other programming languange.

Not using data elements for fields means goiung back to stone age deliberately.

C.
